The site was built with the enterprise-class Plone content management system (CMS). The site can handle staggering traffic loads: high profile news such as the capture of infamous terrorists will generate traffic to the FBI site reaching over 150,000 hits per second.

The site is safeguarded by a custom-designed smart cache network and is a read-only replica of the firewalled, internal content editing site. It is able to withstand sustained Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) cyberattacks at levels that have crippled other government and corporate systems.

Streamlined Editing and Flexibility

The site serves over 125,000 content items consisting of a mix of text, PDFs, images, video, podcasts, and blogs. Created by 130 content editors located around the world, this content goes through customized publication workflows, upload quotas, and finely-grained delegated security.
